CHAPTER TWELVE
A Month Later
On her way to delivering the fresh linens to the linen storage one afternoon, Penny passed Massa Falconâs bedroom and, seeing his door open, she peeked inside.
Falcon never left his bedroom door open and mustâve done it in haste on his way to his morning business trip.
He didnât allow anyone in his room except for Sissy. Even Penny wasnât allowed.
Penny peeked down the massive hallway, and not seeing Sissy or anyone else, she snuck inside and closed the door.
Sheâd, of course, snuck peeks inside since moving to Falconâs Grove, but this was the first time she actually stood in his room.
It was an explosion of French-style elegance. French influenced shown in everything from the cabriole legs on the chairs and tables to the plush cushions and massive bed with rattan head and footboard.
Pennyâs stare stopped on the oak dressing table by the two-door closet. She figured Falconâs wife loved that table because Rose and Catherine stayed at their dressing tables for hours. Women in the South made dolling up an art form and none seemed to take less than an hour to complete the task.
The room suffocated her with the smell of richness, which to Penny smelled of brand new leather.
She walked to the bed and touched the plain, white bedspread and sheets made of luxurious linen. She suddenly felt a chill, but not from fear or apprehension, from Falconâs loneliness. Penny could actually feel his heartbreak just being in the room.
Sitting on the bed with her back to the door, Penny inched open the drawer of his nightstand and found a pile of letters written in Falconâs fancy handwriting.
As Penny read the letters, her heart dropped. At first sheâd assumed they were some sort of journal, but they were letters heâd written to his wife after her death. Letters groveling and apologizing for how heâd treated her. Penny gasped, wondering what Falcon couldâve done to Mary that was so bad. For heâd been a gentleman with her, perfect. She couldnât imagine him doing anything wrong.
But these letters suggested otherwise. The first ones began right after Maryâs death, and he even apologized to the baby. As the letters went on, Falcon seemed more and more depressed and desperate for her forgiveness.
âForgiveness for what, Massa?â Penny whispered as she scanned the writings.
âPenny!â Falcon marched inside, his boots shaking the floor. âWhat is the meaning of this?â Lines of frustration and anger broke out over his animated face and his eyes turned red as beets. âWhat the hell are you doing?â
âMassa, Iââ
âYouâre reading my letters?â Before Penny could stand, Falcon flew to her and snatched the letters out her hand. âHow dare you?â
âIâs sorry, Massa!â Penny jumped off the bed and backed away from it. âIâs so sorry. Iâs meant no harm. Iâs putting up the linens andââ
âYou know the rules!â He put the letters in the drawer and slammed it. âYou donât come in here unless youâre supposed to.â His eyes almost popped out of their sockets. âI canât believe this, Penny.
