CHAPTER TWELVE

A Month Later

On her way to delivering the fresh linens to the linen storage one afternoon, Penny passed Massa Falcon’s bedroom and, seeing his door open, she peeked inside.

Falcon never left his bedroom door open and must’ve done it in haste on his way to his morning business trip.

He didn’t allow anyone in his room except for Sissy. Even Penny wasn’t allowed.

Penny peeked down the massive hallway, and not seeing Sissy or anyone else, she snuck inside and closed the door.

She’d, of course, snuck peeks inside since moving to Falcon’s Grove, but this was the first time she actually stood in his room.

It was an explosion of French-style elegance. French influenced shown in everything from the cabriole legs on the chairs and tables to the plush cushions and massive bed with rattan head and footboard.

Penny’s stare stopped on the oak dressing table by the two-door closet. She figured Falcon’s wife loved that table because Rose and Catherine stayed at their dressing tables for hours. Women in the South made dolling up an art form and none seemed to take less than an hour to complete the task.

The room suffocated her with the smell of richness, which to Penny smelled of brand new leather.

She walked to the bed and touched the plain, white bedspread and sheets made of luxurious linen. She suddenly felt a chill, but not from fear or apprehension, from Falcon’s loneliness. Penny could actually feel his heartbreak just being in the room.

Sitting on the bed with her back to the door, Penny inched open the drawer of his nightstand and found a pile of letters written in Falcon’s fancy handwriting.

As Penny read the letters, her heart dropped. At first she’d assumed they were some sort of journal, but they were letters he’d written to his wife after her death. Letters groveling and apologizing for how he’d treated her. Penny gasped, wondering what Falcon could’ve done to Mary that was so bad. For he’d been a gentleman with her, perfect. She couldn’t imagine him doing anything wrong.

But these letters suggested otherwise. The first ones began right after Mary’s death, and he even apologized to the baby. As the letters went on, Falcon seemed more and more depressed and desperate for her forgiveness.

“Forgiveness for what, Massa?” Penny whispered as she scanned the writings.

“Penny!” Falcon marched inside, his boots shaking the floor. “What is the meaning of this?” Lines of frustration and anger broke out over his animated face and his eyes turned red as beets. “What the hell are you doing?”

“Massa, I—”

“You’re reading my letters?” Before Penny could stand, Falcon flew to her and snatched the letters out her hand. “How dare you?”

“I’s sorry, Massa!” Penny jumped off the bed and backed away from it. “I’s so sorry. I’s meant no harm. I’s putting up the linens and—”

“You know the rules!” He put the letters in the drawer and slammed it. “You don’t come in here unless you’re supposed to.” His eyes almost popped out of their sockets. “I can’t believe this, Penny.
